A more demanding version of our popular combination tour, with 8 days cycling to the top of the South Island and a days guided sea kayaking in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds.
This tour takes you from Christchurch to Kaikoura and the spectacular Pacific Ocean’s coastal scenery. Then it’s on to the vineyards of Blenheim, before the relaxed pace of Nelson and Marlborough Sounds. From Anakiwi it’s back to Blenheim for a quick bike around the vineyards to end the trip.
We will meet you at your accommodation in Christchurch with bicycles and equipment and you then cycle to Waipara. This is a gentle start to the trip cycling through farmland on the Canterbury Plains
Waipara to Mt Lyford. Over all a more demanding day’s cycling through initially open countryside to the small town of Waikari. It is around here that interesting rock formations can be seen as a result of weathered limestone outcrops. From Waikari the ride is a little easier for next 50km until you reach Waiau. The gradient then steepens as you head north towards the Inland Kaikoura Mountain Range. Total cycling distance is 85km
Mt Lyford to Kaikoura. The day starts with some steady climbs as you leave Mt Lyford and then there is a gradual loss of altitude as you head to Kaikoura on the Pacific Coast. Scenery is initially rugged and mountainous around, but flattens out as you near the coast. Total cycling distance is 65km
Sightseeing day in Kaikoura, where you can take in a whale watching tour, swimming with the dolphins, or any of the many other attractions (additional costs apply), before an afternoon cycle to Kekerengu. Distance to Kekerengu is 65km
Kekerengu to Blenheim. This can be a more demanding day on the bike especially if the wind is not in your favor. The scenery is spectacular though as you follow the coastline giving you a chance to spot more seals basking on the rocks. Once you leave the coast the countryside is open, somewhat barren, but there are great views of the Richmond Range. Total cycling distance is 70km.
Blenheim to Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds. This day starts with a gentle flat ride before a short climb before Picton. From Picton it is a very picturesque ride around the beautiful bays of Marlborough Sounds to your destination in Anakiwa. Total cycling distance 45km.
Explore Marlbourgh Sounds with a guided and fully catered sea kayaking day tour. The Marlborough Sounds is home to a wide variety of bird and marine life and sea kayaking is an ideal way to see them. You also may get the chance to spot the endangered Hectors Dolphins. Truly magical!
Anakiwa to Blenheim. A chance to wander and explore the native bush on the Queen Charlotte Track before you are back on the bike, returning to Blenheim. The cycling gently undulates around for most of the day apart from a steep climb to Havelock. Distance for the day is 55km.
End of tour with afternoon train back to Christchurch. A chance to explore the many vineyards of Blenheim in the morning.
