This bike tour starts from Christchurch and straight into the hills of Banks Peninsula, for spectacular views of Christchurch, the Southern Alps and the extinct volcano that forms Lyttelton Harbour.
Then it’s your choice of a quick descent or the more demanding hills of the crater rim, as you head to the seaside village of Governors Bay. From Governors Bay its a moderate climb to stunning views of the southern aspect of Banks Peninsula and then a gentle bike alongside lake Forsyth and lake Ellesmere and onto the small town of Little River with it’s quiet and relaxed pace.
From Little River you head over the steep 400m hill into Akaroa Harbour. With a number of route options, it’s either a gentle ride alone the coast or a demanding climb around the crater rim to the quaint seaside township of Akaroa. From Akaroa you return to Christchurch via the bus or bike (adding another day) to complete your tour.
We will meet you at your accommodation in Christchurch with bicycles and equipment and you then cycle to Governors Bay. There are different route options depending on how much cycling you wants to start with or how demanding you want you day. Distance cycled is 25-55km dependent on route.
Governors Bay to Little River. An undulating start before a steady climb to the summit of Gebbies Pass and then a gradual descent back to sea level, before a relaxed flat ride to Little River via the Rail Trail. Distance today is 45km.
Little River to Akaroa. Today’s ride starts with a short flat ride before you begin the steep climb to the hilltop (440m). From here you have to choice of either a steep descent to Akaroa Harbour and then an undulating ride around to Akaroa, or more demanding and hill route following the summit road above the harbour before a steep descent into Akaroa. Distance cycled is 30-45km.
Akaroa to Christchurch via bus transfer. (Bus fare included) Or return by bike to Christchurch adding another day to you tour.
